Photography : Edward Burtynsky

Manufactures Landscapes by Edward Burtynsky

Edward Burtynsky is an environmental photographer from Canada. He is famous for taking large format photographs of industrial landscape. He was exposed to the world of photography since young age, as his father purchased a darkroom including with the materials when Edward was 11 years old. Since then he learnt photography together with his father and his sister. His inspiration and influences include Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Eadweard Muybridge and Carleton Watkins.

One of his projects titled " Manufactured Landscape " explained about the consumerism and industrialism that has been going on in China, landscapes that have been altered by large-scale human activities. The photos were taken with large format field camera on large 4x5-inch sheet film and developed into high-resolution, large dimensions prints. Across his photographs, there are a sense of majestic and grand feeling despite the subject that he took was anything but majestic. It's a juxtaposition which he created with his photographs. In the series, he took photos of people who were working in industrial area in China. He also shots a bunch of people who were living alongside with mountains of garbage. It's neither healthy nor recommended, as the people are too poor to afford a flat in the city area.

I really like the composition and how he framed his pictures, its beautiful and everything seems to be in order. Though it was messy, there was a sense of order in his photos. I also like how he used color to enhance the feelings inside the photographs. Bright and contrast color were used to bring attention and to enhance the visual impact of the photographs.
